CFMOTO envisioned a team tournament of motorcycling skill and camaraderie and the CFMOTO MT Challenge was born. The contest was designed to pitch eighteen squads from around the globe into a 48-hour hang-out of tasks, competition, skill-tests, good vibes and more. The location of Australia’s southern metropolis – home to the country’s F1 and MotoGP Grands Prix – was chosen as a base for the final after a series of national qualifiers and trials from South America to Europe to Australia.

The trials gave participants and onlookers a taste of what was to come in Melbourne through mud riding, water obstacles, slalom, high-and-low speed and control tests with the CFMOTO 800MT-X. CFMOTO MT Challenge temporary zones became wickedly fun arenas where the mettle of the riders and the metal of the machinery was pushed to the fore. The trials also served to filter the best finalists of four riders per country, who all then embarked to Australia to vie for the big prize. There was glory, and bragging rights on the line but the unity, teamwork and the international community ambience of the CFMOTO MT Challenge was the main attraction as the teams came from a spread of four continents. A case in point was seen in the circumstances surrounding Team Mongolia and Team Turkey. Events beyond their control meant that both squads were missing members at ‘go time’, so they joined forces and formed one line-up! Team Turkey&Mongolia!

The first day involved the Venue Challenge. A slew of 10 assignments with diverse names like the ‘Figures 8 Plus Challenge’, ‘Tennis Ball Challenge’, ‘SENA Blindfold Control Challenge’, ‘Steeplechase Challenge’, ‘Kangaroo Chase Challenge’ (no animals included!) ‘Track Relay Timing Challenge’, ‘Rock Push’ the ‘Tai Chi Challenge’. Balance, co-ordination, positioning, throttle control, team communication and assistance were critical through the CFMOTO MT Challenge play park. Points were awarded, penalties (placing a foot or dropping the bike) were given. Venue Challenge was demanding but also playful! The ‘Kangaroo Chase’ asked the riders to loop over consecutive uneven mounds in the quickest possible time. The Tennis Challenge involved picking up tennis balls from cones and throwing them into onto a target.

The second day encompassed the Adventure Challenge and this required more dedicated saddle time with loops through jungle settings and a forest scenario where the teams had to traverse a large fallen tree! The schedule asked for 180km of riding and GPS navigation along twisty and treacherous sections to really put throttle hands to the test. Finally, the ‘Victory Trail Challenge’ was a true ask of poise, equilibrium to reach the peak of the activity and also, hopefully, the competition standings.

Adversity and toughness were requisites, and it was efforts and perseverance of Jazmin Judith Bautista Vega who caught the eye in this respect. The sole female entrant inspired her Team Mexico compatriots and other rivals throughout both days and was a deserving winner of the ‘Best MT Spirit’ Award.

The competitive instincts of the riders were stoked when they had to battle the clock or outpoint each other. There was a span of ages, a lot of awesome ability and a lot of laughter. At the close of competition it was Team New Zealand that accumulated the most points across the board. The Kiwis were declared victors ahead of Team Romania and Team West Balkan in third place. Individual honours went to Chris Power (from New Zealand), Julian Raduta (from Romania) and Tim Coleman (from Australia). The best Chinese representation came from Li Juan who, along with Chris Power, picked up one of several Best Technique gongs for low-speed control and skill. Jan Slemenda (riding for Czechia) and Tim Coleman were other recipients; the former for strength and resilience from the seesaw obstacle to the mud pit, from gravel to the log section — every move was steady and decisive, showing true off-road mastery. The latter conquered the Kangaroo Chase Challenge with precise throttle control.

The CFMOTO 800MT-X is the adventure flagship motorcycle for the brand and was the ideal foil for an event like the CFMOTO MT Challenge. The bike features 95hp and 87Nm of torque, top touring specs like cornering ABS, adjustable traction control and unbeatable ergonomics for both long cruises and full feedback in more tricky terrain. The MT-X incarnation meant it had the technical specifications, the durability and the agility to become a competition animal. The riders appreciated the virtues of the motorcycle as it was drilled through some of the hardest partitions of the two-day trek.
