Iconic Revival: The new BMR R 12 S

Manila, Philippines. It was in 1973 when BMW Motorrad set the tone for sporty ambitions and a more dynamic design language with the iconic BMW R 90 S. At the time, its aerodynamic handlebar fairing and red-laid “90” in the R 90 S emblem, together with an impressive 67 hp and 200 km/hr, won the hearts of riders and racers alike.

Today, SMC Asia Car Distributors Corp., the official importer and distributor of BMW Motorrad in the Philippines is excited to present the modern revival of the motorcycle icon in the form of the New BMW R2 S which is limited to just 20 units in the Philippines.

A history of racing success. The BMW R 90S is not just celebrated for its looks and performance, but with a racing legacy that helped shape the BMW Motorrad brand for years to come. In 1976, riders Hans-Otto Butenuth and Helmut Dahne celebrated a class victory at the Production TT on the demanding Isle of Man. In the same year, Steve McLaughin also won the prestigious 200 Miles of Daytona, and his teammate Reg Pridmore became the first AMA Superbike Champion in history.

The BMW R 12 S embodies the spirit of the R 90S for the modern world. The new BMW R 12 S builds upon the Concept Ninety that was presented by BMW Motorrad in May 2013, and incorporates key details that make up a perfect homage to the R 90 S.

Based on the current R 12 nineT, the stunning R 12 S includes the handlebar-mounted cockpit fairings with the tinted windshield, the seat with contrast stitching, and the Lava Orange metallic paint finish as a nod to the legendary R 90 S Daytona Orange from 1975. The design is perfectly complemented by details such as the red-laid ‘5’ on the side covers, the red double line, and the brushed and clear-lacquered aluminum surfaces of the tank and seat hump. The seat height remains unchanged from the BMW R 12 nineT at 795mm.

Performance and benchmark standard features for the segment. Based on the recently launched BMW R 12 nineT, the new BMW R 12 S carries over the ever-charming and exciting 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled boxer rated 109 hp and 115 Nm of torque.

As with every BMW motorcycle, safety and technology features are a highlight, with Hill Start Control, Shift Assistant Pro, Heated Grips, Cruise Control, and Headlight Pro (lean sensitive, adaptive headlight) as standard along with ABS Pro, Dynamic Traction Control, and keyless ride. Tire Pressure Control (IRDC), Connectee Ride COntrol, and the digital display with micro-TFT display (3.5-inches) also come equipped on the R 12 S. The new BMW R 12 S also carries over the three riding modes, “Rain”, “Road”, and “Dynamic”.
