DOE-Petron Run Establishes Critical Benchmarks for Philippines’ Transport Decarbonization Push
The Department of Energy (DOE), in partnership with Petron Corporation, has concluded the 2025 DOE-Petron Fuel Economy Run, generating vital real-world data crucial to the national goal of overhauling the transportation sector. This initiative is a critical step in the Philippines’ push for energy efficiency and sustainable mobility.
Held along the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), the non-competitive exercise saw nearly 70 vehicles. ICE, Hybrid, and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) traverse a 156-kilometer route. The singular focus was on establishing verifiable fuel and energy consumption benchmarks under real-world driving conditions.

Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin emphasized the event’s national importance. “This is not merely an automotive event; it is a critical step in our national strategy for energy security and environmental sustainability,” she stated, noting that the transport sector consumes a massive 34% of the country’s total energy use.

The results, slated for public release on the DOE website. It will directly serve as a practical reference for two key groups for public sector procurement and consumer choice.

Public Sector Procurement
The data will guide government agencies and Local Government Units (LGUs) in purchasing efficient fleet vehicles. This coinside as reference under the Government Energy Management Program (GEMP).
Consumer Choice
Motorists will gain an objective reference for making informed purchasing decisions, helping to drive market demand toward more efficient and cleaner models.

The run also highlighted the dual-track approach to mobility. Conventional and hybrid vehicles used Petron’s premium fuels. And the growing participation of BEVs, supported by Petron’s expanding EV charging network alongsides the expressway. This embarks on a good outlook of accelerating infrastructure development. In addition, multi-stakeholder collaboration is key to achieving the nation’s goals under the Philippine Energy Plan and the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA). Ultimately, its aim to reduce fuel dependency and curb transport-related emissions is on the way.
