The recent launch of the Bell Magnum at Throttle and Trail Co. (TATCO) marks a fresh helmet product for the “Modern Classic” segment in the Philippines. While the looks and design are a throwback to the 1970s, its architecture is a complete overhaul, significant for today’s global safety standards.

The Multi-Shell Strategy

One of the most critical technical aspects of the Bell Magnum is its five-shell-size configuration. In the world of open-face helmets, many manufacturers use two shells and vary the padding thickness to save costs.

Bell’s decision to utilize five distinct shells ensures:

  • Optimal Proportionality: Eliminates the “bobblehead” look that is common in smaller sizes.
  • Safety Efficiency: Each shell is engineered to handle specific impact energies relative to the head size it protects.
  • Compliance: The ECE 22.06 Standard.

Unlike the older 22.05 standard, the new 22.06 testing involves:

  • Rotational Acceleration Tests: Measures a helmet’s capability to protect the wearer’s brain during oblique impacts.
  • Increased Impact Points: Testing at higher and lower speeds across 18 different points on the shell.
  • Accessory Integration: Ensuring that the three-snap visor system does not compromise the structural integrity of the helmet during a slide.

Materials and Ergonomics

The Magnum balances traditional materials with modern maintenance features:

  • Internal Lining: Uses a moisture-wicking, removable, and washable terry cloth. A strategic choice for the Philippine climate. This accounts for Sweat management and hygiene concerns for daily riders.
  • Closure System: A premium leather-wrapped chin strap provides a soft interface against the skin, reducing chafing during long tours.
  • Ventilation Architecture: Despite its retro appearance, the shell is designed to maintain a consistent airflow through the internal EPS liner, preventing heat buildup.
  • Modularity and Precision Fit: The integrated three-snap pattern is a precision-aligned configuration to fit a wide array of aftermarket shields and visors.

This allows the Magnum to transition from a pure “café racer” look to a more functional touring setup with a full-face shield.

Value Engineering

At a price point of ₱6,890, the Magnum is positioned as a high-value entry into the premium gear market. It offers the structural reliability of a heritage brand like Bell with the modern engineering required for the 2026 riding landscape.

For the technical-minded rider, the Bell Magnum proves that “retro” doesn’t have to mean “outdated.” It is a modern safety device wearing a vintage suit.
